The ICC T20 World Cup is the shortest format of the tournament. Earlier it used to occur every year, but after 2016 the match occurred every four years. It is one of the most-watched sports events globally. ICC conducts it in different countries globally, so for 6 ICC T20 World Cup events have been completed, and ten teams participate in the championship every year.

The first ever T20 international was played between New Zealand and England women’s team and New Zealand women won the match by around nine runs in 2004. In 2005 the first-ever Men’s t 20 match was held at Eden Park Australia. The shortest format of the game started gaining prominence after 2006.

T20 World Cup 2007

It was conducted in South Africa from 11th to 24th September, and 12 countries globally took part in the tournament. There were four groups consisting of 12 teams, including West Indies, South Africa, Bangladesh, Australia, England, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Kenya, India, Pakistan, and Scotland.

To qualify for the quarterfinals, each team played two matches, and the team of quarter-finals included Australia, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Bangladesh. As a result, only India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Australia could make their place in semis while Pakistan and India met each other in the final. Under Ms Dhoni’s leadership, India won the first-ever ICC t 20.

T20 World cup 2009

England hosted the second edition of the t 20 World Cup in 2009 from 5th to 21st June. Twelve nations participated in the tournament. They were divided into four groups: India, Bangladesh, Ireland, Pakistan, England and Netherlands, Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand, South Africa, and Scotland. Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa have made their way to the semi-finals, where Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka and won its first ever t 20 crown under the captaincy of Younis Khan.

West Indies hosted it, and 12 teams played 27 matches. The teams included Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, South Africa, India, Afghanistan, England, West Indies, and Ireland.

Every team played two matches to seal the places for the quarter-finals. Sri Lanka, Australia, England, and Pakistan landed in the semi-final, where England defeated Australia and won the first title. The 4th edition of the ICC t 20 World Cup was held in Sri Lanka, where 12 teams played 27 matches. England India Afghanistan Australia West Indies Ireland Sri Lanka Zimbabwe South Africa Bangladesh New Zealand and Pakistan took part in the match. West Indies defeated Sri Lanka in the finals and won the cup for the first time under the captaincy of Darren Sammy.

The 5th edition of the World Cup was hosted by Bangladesh 10 teams participated in the main event. They played 35 matches in total. The countries that participated in the World Cup included India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, England, South Africa, Netherlands, and West Indies.

All the teams played four matches in the group stage and got into the quarter-finals. Sri Lanka won the match against India in the final and won their first crown. India hosted the 6th edition, and ten teams played the main event. India hosted the match for the first time, so the teams were segregated into two groups, including West Indies, South Africa, England, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, and India, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Australia. All the teams played four matches, and the top 2 teams got qualified from the respective groups.

England and West Indies played the final matches at Eden Gardens, and West Indies won the World Cup for the second time. Tamim Iqbal made the highest run in the tournament, while Mohammed Nabi was the highest wicket-taker. In addition, Virat Kohli was named as the man of the series for his exceptional batting skills throughout the series.

T20 World Cup 2021

The BCCI hosted the World Cup in Oman and UAE. The 12 teams were divided into two groups, including England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, who played among each other. In contrast, the other group consisted of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nambiar, Scotland, and New Zealand. The cricket fans witness the clashes between New Zealand and England, Australia, and Pakistan in the semi-finals.
